Project 2: Coaster

Materials Needed:

  • Six (6) strips of fabric 1.5 inches by 6.5 inches in different colours or patterns
  • 6.5 inch x 6.5 inch piece of felt
  • Thread
  • Bobbin
  • Iron
  • Ironing board
  • Sewing Machine
  • Universal Sewing Needle

Step 1: Arrange the 6 strips of fabric in the order you wish to have your finished design

Step 2: Pin or clip the first two pieces right sides together. Sew these together using ¼ seam allowance, back-stitching the first and last stitches

Step 3: Lay the piece you have just sewn face down and use your thumbnail to press open the seam.

Step 4: Repeat this process of adding a new strip to what you have already sewn, pressing each new seam open with your thumbnail.

Step 5: Once all six strips have been sewn together, press all the seams open with a hot iron so each lays flat.

Step 6: Pin or clip the six strips to the backing fabric with right sides together.

Step 7: Sew around the entire project, back-stitching the first and last stitches, and pivoting at the corners leaving a three finger gap on one side edge. This will be used to turn the coaster right side out.

Step 8: Trim the excess fabric and clip the corners. BE SURE TO LEAVE THE OPEN GAP FABRIC ALONE. This will be tucked inside later, just like you did on your bookmark.

Step 9: Turn the project right side out and push out the corners with a blunt object.

Step 10: Tuck in the extra two flaps at the opening and press the entire coaster flat.

Step 11: With a 1/8th seam allowance, topstitch around all four sides, backstitching at the first and last stitches.

TIP: start in the middle of one of the long edges so that you’re not trying to start on a bulky corner.
